MATCH PREVIEW
SYDNEY SIXERS
Not long ago, the Sixers were placed at the second spot, but a loss to Melbourne Stars followed by back to back rain-inflicted encounters has put Sixers in a bit of spot of bother. While they still are favorites to qualify for the playoffs, they need to win at least a couple of more matches to ensure their qualification. As it stands, they have 13 points to their name in 11 matches, and would need at least 16 to feel safe.
Prior to first their clash against Melbourne Stars, Sydney Sixers were flying high. Although not much has changed since then, rain in a couple of matches have made a situation a little bit tricky for them. After sharing points with Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers looked upbeat coming in against Sydney Thunder, but poor batting display disappointed them big time.
After the match was reduced to 16 overs, their batsmen needed to improvise and score quickly, but in quest to do so, they lost their wickets in patches. Eventually they were dismantled completely for a total of just 76. Had it not been for the innings from Justin Avendano, who scored 28, the Sixers would have bundled out for a lot less. Apart from him, only Ben Dwarshius could score in double figures as all other batsmen failed to trouble the scorers much.
While the pitch had plenty of assistance for the bowlers and the overcast conditions helped the bowlers as well, defending such a low total was never going to be easy. The Sixers started off well as they picked up a couple of wickets early in the innings, and even though one could argue that rain played spoil-sport to the Sixers' fortunes, it was never going to be Sixers' game, anyway.
MELBOURNE STARS
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Melbourne Stars have looked prolific. The points table is a strong evidence of it as they stand firmly at the top with 20 points to their name and ascertain of the top of the table finish. Their only loss in the tournament came against Adelaide Strikers, the loss which was quite some time ago.
The Stars have played flawless ceicket so far and do not appear to be a one-man army. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis have done incredibly well for them, but the likes of Hilton Cartwright and Nic Maddinson have played the supporting role to perfection. Along with their terrific batting lineup, they have a superb bowling attack. The likes of Sandeep Lamichhane, Glenn Maxwell, and Clint Hitchcliffe have done exceedingly well to stem the flow of runs in the middle overs.
