ABOUT THE MATCH

We arrive at the third test between South Africa and England with barely anything to choose between the two sides. The scoreline is 1-1 and both the test matches could have gone a bit differently just as easily indeed.

A couple of injury concerns will force changes ahead of the third test match as James Anderson and Jack Leach have left the England squad. South Africa has announced an unchanged squad for this match and is traveling with just 12 players in total.

The venue for this next match is St.George’s Park, a venue where England has had a fair bit of success in the past and also where South African teams have tended to struggle a bit. Will South Africa bounce back after the loss in the previous match or will England build on that momentum and come close to a series win?

SOUTH AFRICA

This South African team has been besieged from all areas and is under tremendous pressure. The entire management has undergone a change, sponsors have been pulling out, there are calls of racism against the captain, and never has a South African team looked so ripe for the picking while playing at home.

In such a situation, players need to be backed and that is exactly what South Africa has done.

The same playing eleven from the second match plus Dane Paterson have traveled to St. George’s Park for the third test. Unless there is an injury to the fast bowlers, we don’t think there is going to be any change in the eleven for this match.

South Africa knows it will need to bat a lot better than it did in the previous match. Almost all of South Africa’s batsmen have scored runs in the series but the batting lineup has rarely performed together. Dean Elgar, Pieter Malan, Rassie van der DUssen, and Quinton de Kock are all in good form.

Zubayr Hamza and Faf du Plessis are perhaps the only players that are short of runs. This is a good place to start from for the side as its major batsmen are in a healthy space. A little bit of luck and we could see South Africa put together a long string of scores.

Kagiso Rabada, Vernon Philander, Anrich Nortje, and Keshav Maharaj will shoulder the bulk of the bowling responsibility with Dwaine Pretorius as the fifth bowler. Philander has been the pick of the South African bowers so far, in our opinion, although he got just four wickets in the previous match.

He is the most skilled of the lot and could really make the ball talk under suitable conditions. Keshav Maharaj is also going to have a big role to play as the match wears on and the spinners start to become more important.

ENGLAND

A fantastic performance from England in the second test saw it dominate South Africa for the majority of the contest. James Anderson took five wickets in the first inning to help set up the match while Dom Sibley and Ben Stokes put to the task beyond the reach of South Africa.

England is not going to have James Anderson for the rest of the series, though, and that is a big loss. Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes, and Mark Wood are the frontrunners to take the place vacated by James Anderson.

Jofra Archer has been the preferred choice in recent times but his struggles in test cricket could force England to consider Chris Woakes. We don’t think England is going to risk Mark Wood over the duration of five days just yet.

The loss of James Anderson is a massive blow to England and could change the nature of the contest. Stuart Broad, Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, and Dominic Bess will be the frontline bowlers alongside whoever is picked as Anderson’s replacement.

If Stokes continues to bowl the same amount he did in the previous test then England could get away with not having Anderson but if Stokes is unable to shoulder the same workload then it becomes a problem.

England’s batting was quite up to the mark in the previous test. Dominic Sibley has made a great impression at the top of the order although Zak Crawley is still getting used to his position. With Joe Denly, Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, and Jos Buttler in the side with some capable all-rounders to follow, England is blessed with batting depth that other teams can only dream of.
