ABOUT THE MATCH

India was crushed by Australia in the first ODI in a manner that is not usual for India anywhere in the world, forget home conditions. Not only did India’s batting fail in front of an excellent Aussie attack but its bowlers were unable to take a single Australian wicket.

Australia arrived in India with three wins in its previous three matches against India and has now extended that record to four. Another win in this match will ensure that it wins the ODI series and continues its recent dominance over India in the ODI format.

We have seen over the last few series that India starts slow and then bounces back. Doing so against Australia is perhaps the toughest challenge that India will face in its home season. Rishab Pant has been ruled out of the second ODI after receiving a blow to his head while Australia has no injury concerns.

India vs Australia 2nd ODI 2020 is going to be played at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot on the 17th of January 2020.

INDIA

Nothing went right for India in the first ODI and that hammering at the hands of a full-strength Australian side was the wakeup call they needed. We think India made some mistakes in strategy and execution which made it difficult for it to win right from the start. Losing the toss at the Wankhede was also pretty tough.

Looking ahead to Rajkot, though, where another batting beauty awaits them, India needs to make some changes.

The most important change will be to bring their best batsman back to his preferred batting spot. Virat Kohli may be the captain and the senior-most player in the side but he should not give up his batting position for anyone.

Changing something that has been working to accommodate three openers in the side is just not worth it. Lokesh Rahul has to play this match now that he is the only keeper in the squad but he must bat at number 4 with Shreyas Iyer shifting down to 5.

We could also see the return of Manish Pandey or Kedar Jadhav into the side to bolster the lower order and take the place vacated by Rishab Pant. The bowling attack suffered some serious damage to its reputation in the previous match but we don’t see any changes being made.

The two options at India’s disposal are to bring in Yuzvendra Chahal or Navdeep Saini. We don’t think India is going to press the panic button just yet and stick to the same bowling attack.

AUSTRALIA

Australia put in a clinical performance in the first ODI and outplayed India in every single department of the game. The bowling was right on the spot with effective plans against every Indian batsman while the batting was completely dominant.

There is no need for Australia to change anything and we can be almost certain that the same playing eleven play if there are no injury concerns. Mitchell Starc was brilliant against the lower-order while Pat Cummins always threatened the batsmen.

Interestingly, Adam Zampa seems to be developing some sort of an advantage against Virat Kohli. This is one battle that will be very good to watch when it plays out.

With Ashton Agar and Kane Richardson in the side, Australia’s bowling attack is superior to India’s even in Indian conditions.

David Warner and Aaron Finch did not let anyone get an opportunity to bat but this kind of a start is not going to happen every time. If there is a weakness in this Australian side then it could be starting against spin once the ball has become a bit older.

Labuschagne has yet to play an ODI inning and could be a weak link. Steve Smith, Ashton Turner, and Alex Carey are all very strong batsmen, though, and will be difficult to contain in the final overs if they get the chance.

Australia’s ODI side is in peak form right now and stopping it is going to take something very special.
