ABOUT THE MATCH

India’s tour of New Zealand 2020 is about to begin and there is a sense of expectation surrounding the Indian team. Times when the Indian team used to get cold feet outside their own country are long past. India won its ODI series handsomely against New Zealand the last time they were there and we are sure they will have their eyes set on a bigger haul this time around.
New Zealand has been struck by injuries to some important players ahead of this series but never count out the Kiwis. They are always a tough side to play anywhere in the world and especially in their own conditions. The New Zealand players have been playing a lot of T20 cricket in their domestic T20 league and the players in the squad would be raring to go.
The T20 series is going to be played in Australia in just about ten months and that gives the T20 matches an added layer of context.

MATCH PREVIEW

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is a bit on the back foot going into this series because it is without most of its first-choice fast bowlers. There is no Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, or Matt Henry for this series. Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Mitchell Santner, and Blair Tickner seem likely to the bowlers that will start for New Zealand in the first match. Scott Kuggeleijn is also an option that could be explored in the first match.
This is a good bowling attack but not one that is going to be able to dominate the Indians. The left-arm angle that Blair Tickner presents could be something to watch out for but overall, the Indians are not going to be very worried about this New Zealand bowling attack.
Colin de Grandhomme, Colin Munro, and Daryl Mitchell can all bowl too so there is not going to any shortage of bowling options for New Zealand.
The real thrust to win for New Zealand is going to have to come from the batting.
We all know how destructive Colin Munro and Martin Guptill can be but the pair of them do not have a very good record against India. New Zealand needs good starts from this pair on a regular basis to set up a platform for Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor in the middle.
Colin de Grandhomme was sent up the order recently to try and keep the momentum going in the middle overs. This a tactic that could be tried again to try and unsettle the Indian spinners. Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner are not the best players in the lower-order but they can certainly bat.

INDIA

India has been struck an injury blow as Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the New Zealand series. For the T20 format, India has called up Sanju Samson, presumably for his ability to bat in the top-order. Sanju Samson got an opportunity in the third T20 against Sri Lanka where he faced two deliveries in total. He smashed one for six and got stumped on the second.
That approach sort of typifies India’s new aggressive approach to T20 batting. Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer are the new top-4 that India seems likely to stick with. There is plenty of churn in the lower-order and a number of players will be hoping to get a run.
Rishab Pant and Manish Pandey are likely to slug it out for this slot with Sanju Samson being the dark-horse.
India could opt to play both Rishab Pant and Manish Pandey if they don’t want to give Shivam Dube a game but then the point of taking Dube on the tour seems lost to us. Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Navdeep Saini, Jaspreet Bumrah, and Mohammad Shami are all likely to find a place in the playing eleven.
This combination gives India a world-class bowling attack with fast-bowlers capable of hitting their yorkers on demand, all-rounders, and three different spin-bowling options. The Indian team is regarded as one of the best in every format of the game and is going to be very tough to beat.
