South Africa is not quite the opponent it was a few years back and the strain on the side from all quarters is starting to show. There are pressures on team selection, on the selectors themselves, and on the captain. There are already rumors that this next test match may be the last for Faf du Plessis who has already been removed from the ODI leadership as well.
Can South Africa find a way to give its captain a fitting farewell?
South Africa vs England 4th Test Match is going to be played at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg starting on the 24th of January 2020.
Kagiso Rabada has been banned from the fourth test match because of repeated disciplinary violations and that means South Africa has an additional selection headache on its hands.
Beuran Hendricks is the other bowler in the squad and will be drafted in for the fourth test.
We also think that Temba Bavuma has a good chance of coming back into the side after he scored 150 in the domestic competition last week. South Africa’s batsmen looked intimidated by England’s fast bowlers in the previous match.
They were rushed by Mark Wood and made to look silly. There is a very real chance that Wood is going to be joined by Archer to make the test even sterner. Senior players of the side like Dean Elgar and Faf du Plessis have to take the lead in setting the tone.
Dean Elgar has some runs to his name but Faf du Plessis has looked very out of form. For du Plessis to change things around is going to take an aggressive mindset and an effort to play more freely.
Zubayr Hamza and Rassie van der Dussen were two of the players that looked a bit uncomfortable against the genuine quicks and will need to work on their game. Quinton de Kock seems to have the best chance of doing something special for South Africa going on current form.
That would mean one of the fastest ever attacks for England to take the field.
It would be very hard on Dom Bess to miss out after two fantastic performances in the previous tests but the conditions could very well dictate such a decision. England’s batting has found its rhythm and most of the players are scoring runs with ease.
Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley are a promising opening pair followed by Joe Denly. The top-3 of this lineup is not the best but they have a lot of potential and some recent success to their name. They could find it tough at the Wanderers, though, where the ball seems to nip around for the duration of the match.
Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Ollie Pope form a brilliant middle-order. All three of them have runs and will be confident of scoring runs even in tough conditions. All three of the players are also capable of counter-attacking should the need arise.
The real interest for us is going to be seeing how the England bowlers perform. Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, and Sam Curran are likely to be joined by Jofra Archer for an intimidating pace attack. The England bowlers will e confident of knocking out the South Africans pretty early if they get a chance.
The pitch will be hard, bouncy, and have some green on it favoring the bowlers. Teams have opted to bat first despite the tough conditions because the bowling conditions remain helpful and cracks in the pitch can make batting more difficult.
